Sales of new single-family homes fell 2.8 percent in January to the lowest rate in nearly 13 years, according to a U.S. Commerce Department report issued Wednesday.

Existing-home sales – including single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – slipped 0.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate(1) of 4.89 million units in January from an upwardly revised level of 4.91 million in December, and are 23.4 percent below the 6.44 million-unit pace in January 2007.

Albany – Sales of existing single-family homes decreased in January by more than 23 percent compared to December 2007, while the median sales price increased by more than 9 percent from the previous month, according to preliminary single-family sales data accumulated by the New York State Association of REALTORS.
