Our mission is to provide education, leadership and representation to enable rental housing providers to operate their businesses successfully, ethically and responsibly.
The WAA was founded in 1979, initially organized to prohibit rent control in any municipality in Wisconsin. That successful initiative was prophetic, as since that time, rent control statutes around the country have been defeated because they had the opposite effect, making rental housing more expensive. Since our beginnings, the WAA has continued to fight for public policies that are beneficial to both landlords and tenants.
The WAA has represented landlords at the State Capitol, giving our members a voice on such issues as fast track eviction for drug dealers in rental units. We have worked to prevent childhood lead poisoning in pre-1978 housing in partnership with HUD's Office of Healthy Homes. The bad check ordinance, named in honor of member Willie Petzrick, was passed by the legislature giving options for municipalities to prosecute those who intentionally write bad checks.
Most recently, the WAA testified on issues of statewide concern including opposing mandatory sprinkler systems in apartment buildings. Our members participated in the Lead Poisoning Prevention Task Force and Special Committee on Expunction of Criminal Records.
